The McHenry County Sheriff's Department has provided an example of what those of us who oppose the new AZ law on immigration fear-- a system of law enforcement which is different for people with a dark completion, or a heavy accent because they were born in another country.
We wish to see illegal immigration fought, with more border patrol agents, and penalties for those who have come here illegally, and for employers who have knowingly employed them. But, the vast majority of hispanic Americans, were born here, or have emmigrated and are productive contributing Legal Citizens. In a case from November of 2008, "Edward Bustos became a U.S. citizen on April 27, 2004, after being honorably discharged from the Army."
A man who put his life on the line, and served honorably in our military, deserves better than to sit in a jail cell all night long because the County Sheriff's Department feels a need to make sure he's a legal citizen. Obviously, the man would not have been treated so dishonorably had his accent been of European origin.
I offer the following, Northwest Herald article for the enlightenment of our communities.
