Chatting with the Tea Party

Beyond politics, there are people.

by Rich Orloff
TeaParty-We-came-unarmed-this-time.jpgA New York liberal playwright travels around the country interviewing Tea Party leaders to answer the question, "Who are these people?"

For a year he attended Tea Party meetings and events in cities large and small in every region of the country. The piece shapes the highlights of over 63 hours of interviews (plus notes from events) to create a play that strives to go beyond sound bites and stereotypes to show the people behind the opinions.

In a journey that's at times disturbing, humorous, moving, and always thought-provoking — as the playwright discovers not only how and if he can affect the people he meets, but also how they may be influencing him.

Everything the interviewees say in the play come directly from the interviews.

NOTE:  This will be a “reading” rather than a full-out performance.  It’s a new play, read by professional actors who have met with a director for one rehearsal.  The playwright will be available afterwards to talk to the audience.  Admission is free.
