I was thinking today of Inauguration Day 2017 with a newly elected Democratic President — I cannot force myself to think otherwise — and it dawned upon me that whoever the winner is they will be white and have won by re-energizing what I call "the Obama coalition" of discrete parties and interest groups. Additionally, by virtue of being white, they will have to fulfill their campaign promises, not burying them in the sub-text of legislation but putting them right out front where everyone can see them and know them for what they are. With a Congress that is even slightly more Democratic that will be easier than what Obama has had to deal with. With a Congress the same or more heavily Republican, it's gonna be even UGH-lier than before. Either way, the new President will will have a rough road ahead.
