The right to vote is the most important right we have as American citizens. The current plan to eliminate a large portion of the polling places in McHenry County is a threat to our democracy. We believe that cramming up to 10 precincts into one polling location, and moving many precincts to unfamiliar and inconvenient venues, will result in the disenfranchisement of thousands of McHenry County citizens, especially the elderly and disabled who will be the most inconvenienced by these drastic changes. Please cancel or delay this ill-advised and untested plan.

The McHenry County Clerk has decided to eliminate dozens of polling locations in 2018, presumably in an attempt to save money. The Clerk has not provided evidence that this plan will save any money at all, but it will definitely make it harder for thousands of citizens to vote. As many as 10 precincts are being crammed into one location. Parking will be at a premium at many of the consolidated locations, especially for elderly and disabled voters. The right to vote is the most important right we have as American citizens. We must not allow a bureaucrat to jeopardize our ability to participate in American democracy.

My husband and I did early voting at the Country Inn & Suites in Crystal Lake. There was a sample ballot for the Republicans and Independents, but nothing for the Dems. When brought to their attention we were told someone must have taken it; no solution was forthcoming.

McHenry County Clerk Mary McClellan maintained that sites which were no longer polling locations would have signs directing voters to their new polling locations. This was not done in District 2. Ran into many voters trying to find their new polling location. As one voter put it, “the Clerk is supposed to encourage voting by making it easy, not by making it difficult to find where to vote.” Additionally, placing a handicapped accessible sign on the door to a polling locations does not make it so. Many site while advertising accessibility were in fact not accessible.

In Alden 1 precinct, we judges of election were given 400 Republican, 250 Democrat ballots of Style 1, and 25 each of ballot Style 248. It turned out that most of our voters were needing style 248, and we needed to call in to the Clerk’s office for more Style 248 several times, for the people who did not want to use the touch screen machine, since there was sometimes a line for the single machine. We judges were concerned that the styles were reversed, and the proposition question that made the difference MAY have been voted on by the wrong group of voters.

Do not limit access to polling!!!! If anything expand it.

My 18 year old son registered to vote on Feb 15th at the Woodstock DMV, and still didn’t have his card the day before the election. We took his voter registration receipt with to vote today directly at the Clerk’s office, and his registration wasn’t in the system at all. They decided to register him on the spot so that he could vote without having to take a provisional ballot. The election judge struggled for over 5 minutes because the system kept telling him that my son’s street address wasn’t valid, even though it’s the same street address on my own voter ID card (on a 118 year old house!). The judge finally forced it to accept the precinct number, and somehow got his registration to work and my son was able to vote. The gentleman cautioned us, though, that my son may have trouble voting in the future, and to come back to the Clerk’s office if he doesn’t receive his new voter registration card in 30 days!!
