Grassroots Action / Parades

“Action is the antidote to despair,” said Joan Baez. Our local party has a long tradition of voicing our opposition to injustice, corruption and intolerance. In our darkest moments, when all seems lost, we still have the First Amendment.

Harvard Milk Days Parade

Parade with us at the 2024 Harvard Milk Days Parade

Join fellow Democrats and candidates as we kick off the parade season with Harvard Milk Days.  It's an election year, and marching with the Democrats is great fun and really important besides. And, we've got a really beautiful new Democratic float -- you really want to see it !

The assembly point is in the parking lot of Harvard High School, at 1103 North Jefferson Street.

It's all happening on Saturday, June 1st, 2024.  The parade steps off promptly at 1:00pm.  It will be crowded, so please plan to arrive by 12ish to find parking and find us, and if you'd like to help decorate the float, please plan to arrive by 11.

You'll be marching with the full slate of our Democratic candidates and officeholders, and it's really important that we have a nice crowd, so please RSVP and plan to come on out.

Also, there's a tradition at McHenry County parades of passing out candy to the kids lining the route.  So we're most gratefully accepting donations of candy (individually wrapped as for Halloween, or cash to purchase same -- party favors like stickers, buttons, bubbles are also great.)

For more information please reach out to Ed Gogol, [email protected] or 815-596-0892.

Juneteenth - Freedom Day Festival

Juneteenth is our newest federal holiday, signed into law by President Joe Biden in 2021, only three short years ago, commemorating the date of June 19, 1865, when federal marshals marched into Galveston Texas, bringing the news that the Civil War was over and enforcing President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. An estimated 250,000 enslaved Black people were granted their freedom, and the celebration of freedom, called Juneteenth, became a tradition.

The McHenry County Juneteenth Committee is proud to bring us the second annual Juneteeth - Freedom Day Festival, on the Woodstock Square from 3:00 to 6:00 PM on Saturday, June 15, 2024.

The program will feature vocalist Darlene Benton; Chicago bluesman Kenneth Davis of the Ken Davis Project; a reading of the order issued by Major General Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865, proclaiming freedom for the remaining 250,000 enslaved Blacks by Patrick Murfin of the Tree of Life Unitarian Universalist Congregation’s Social Justice Team; a short history of McHenry County's Underground Railroad connection; a story reading for the children and a few surprises.

The program will be hosted by Gloria Van Hof. Three food trucks and an ice cream vendor will serve the festival and a number of businesses and community organizations will have booths on the Square.

We McHenry County Democrats are proud to participate in Juneteenth -- watch for our booth.

Visit McHenry County Juneteenth on the web at or on Facebook.

Crystal Lake Independence Day Parade

The Democratic Party of McHenry County has many proud traditions, and none more important than our participation in the Crystal Lake Independence Day Parade.

Come celebrate our nation's heritage of democracy and freedom, and help campaign for all of our great candidates.  And for sure you'll want to see our new float!

It's happening this year on Sunday July 7th, 2024.  The parade steps off at 1:00pm.  It's always crowded so please come by noon or 12:30 at the latest, and if you'd like to help us decorate the float, come at 11.

The assembly point is the parking lot behind (immediately to the north of) the Crystal Lake Municipal Complex (Crystal Lake City Hall on Google) at 100 West Woodstock Street, just west of downtown.  Go around the building to the right to the parking lot by the service building and you'll find us.

The parade proceeds down Dole Avenue and ends at the Dole Mansion where a carnival will be in progress.  It's maybe 1.5 miles total.

Parking is best in the train station lot, if you can find it.  Cars can be positioned in the parking lot for South Elementary School, very near the Dole Mansion, to ferry paraders back to their cars.

Bring your American flags and smiling faces, see you there, please RSVP, and please reach out to [email protected] or 815-596-0892 if you have questions.

The parade steps off at 1:30pm.  It will be crowded so please arrive by 12:30 or 1 at the latest, and if you wish to help us decorate the float, please arrive at 11:30.

The picture above is from 2018, back when Lauren Underwood's district included part of McHenry County.  Wait until you see our new float, it's far fancier.
