Juneteenth is our newest federal holiday, signed into law by President Joe Biden in 2021, commemorating the date of June 19, 1865, when federal marshals marched into Galveston Texas, bringing the news that the Civil War was over and enforcing President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. An estimated 250,000 enslaved Black people were granted their freedom, and the celebration of freedom, called Juneteenth, became a tradition.
The McHenry County Juneteenth Committee is proud to bring us the 2nd annual Juneteeth - Freedom Day Festival, on the Woodstock Square from 3-6 PM on Saturday, June 15th.
The program will feature vocalist Darlene Benton; Chicago bluesman Kenneth Davis of the Ken Davis Project; a reading of the order issued by Major General Gordon Granger by Patrick Murfin of the Tree of Life Unitarian Universalist Congregation’s Social Justice Team; a short history of McHenry County's Underground Railroad connection; a story reading for the children and a few surprises.
The program will be hosted by Gloria Van Hof. We McHenry County Democrats are proud to participate in Juneteenth -- watch for our booth. Enjoy the food trucks and ice cream vendors, visit with local businesses.
