John Labaj signed Stop Voter Suppression Now 2018-03-23 20:40:52 -0500McHenry County Clerk Mary McClellan maintained that sites which were no longer polling locations would have signs directing voters to their new polling locations. This was not done in District 2. Ran into many voters trying to find their new polling location. As one voter put it, “the Clerk is supposed to encourage voting by making it easy, not by making it difficult to find where to vote.” Additionally, placing a handicapped accessible sign on the door to a polling locations does not make it so. Many site while advertising accessibility were in fact not accessible.
Stop Voter Suppression Now!
The McHenry County Clerk has decided to eliminate dozens of polling locations in 2018, presumably in an attempt to save money. The Clerk has not provided evidence that this plan will save any money at all, but it will definitely make it harder for thousands of citizens to vote. As many as 10 precincts are being crammed into one location. Parking will be at a premium at many of the consolidated locations, especially for elderly and disabled voters. The right to vote is the most important right we have as American citizens. We must not allow a bureaucrat to jeopardize our ability to participate in American democracy.
