Virtual Q&A with
Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky
Join the Democratic Parties of Lake and McHenry in welcoming Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky. Under the new maps, Jan will be running to represent many of us. In McHenry County, the new area includes Algonquin Township, Algonquin, Cary, Lake In The Hills, and parts of Crystal Lake.
As Jan said, "I am so excited to get to know you, but first I want to introduce myself. I am a first-generation American, born in Chicago from two Jewish immigrant parents. For college, I stayed local, attending the University of Illinois for a degree in elementary education. But it wasn’t until I noticed that people were getting sick from expired food products in my neighborhood that I got interested in politics. Can you believe that in 1969 many food products did not have expiration dates? I fought to include them, creating a new food safety standard.
I started in grassroots organizing, and since my election to Congress in 1998 I have continued to be a strong advocate for Illinois citizens. I care deeply about women’s reproductive rights, common-sense gun violence protections, renewable and well-paying jobs, and protecting the health and financial well-being of Illinois’ seniors by being a strong advocate for social security and Medicare.
I know that these past couple of years have been hard on many Americans. From the COVID pandemic to partisan fighting, the future of this country may feel uncertain. As my new constituent, I want you to know that I am always committed to fighting for your needs in Congress."
Join us in welcoming her to McHenry County, and getting to know her. We are sure the more you know, the more you will be a Jan Fan too!
Once you RSVP, we will send you the Zoom link.
